One of the goals set forth by the John Carroll University athletic department is to provide opportunities for undegraduate students as well as graduate students to pursue careers within the field of athletics.
For graduate students, the avenues provided are through athletic assistantships. Coaches must be contacted to begin this process -- please consult the staff directory for email addresses and phone numbers.
For more information on the graduate school and available assistantships, click here.
There are also volunteer opportunities available within the athletic department. To inquire about availability, contact Dwight Hollins at (216) 397-1663.
For undergraduate students, there is a Federal Work Study program available. Every year, John Carroll University employs over 800 students in jobs on and off campus through our student employment programs. The athletic department is one of many on campus to participate in this program.
While the majority of these jobs are funded through the federal funds, various departments will list jobs that are open to all students for consideration.

Specific areas of the athletic department have a number of positions open on an annual basis. These areas include athletic training, facilities and equipment, recreation and intramurals, and sports information.
- For athletic training, contact Don McPhillips at (216) 397-4503
- For facilities and equipment, contact Jim Pancher at (216) 397-4504
- For recreation and intramurals (including fitness instructor and lifeguard jobs), contact Sandy Howard at (216) 397-3092
- For sports information, contact Chris Wenzler at (216) 397-4676
It is strongly recommended to contact the supervisors of these areas toward the end of the second semester or in the first half of the summer to secure a job, as these positions tend to fill up quickly.
There are also a handful of circumstances within the department where there are individual job openings or student manager positions working with coaches or athletic administrators. Contact Gretchen Weitbrecht at (216) 397-4194 to inquire about these opportunities.
