Matt Harmon was one of six Blue Streaks to win by a major decision or technical fall against Wilmington
It was wrestling's night at the DeCarlo Varsity Center, but the John Carroll grapplers were putting up points on the scoreboard that would have made a basketball team envious in a 38-3 victory over Wilmington College Tuesday.
In the first nine matches of the night (not including a forefeit at 174), the Blue Streaks wrestlers scored a total of 122 points in building a 38-0 lead. Only a victory by Quakers heavyweight Adam Salyers averted a shutout.,
The John Carroll wrestlers were well prepared for the Quakers, with senior Elie Naoum (Solon, OH, Solon) setting the tempo for the Blue Streaks with his defeat over Donny Herrington at the 125-pound weight class. Naoum trailed early but rallied in the third period to grab a 6-2 win to get the momentum rolling for Carroll.
At 133 pounds, JCU freshman Kevin Nycz (Parma, OH, Holy Name) battled Wilmington's David Evans. The young Blue Streak fell behind 5-0, but then rattled of 14 unanswered points for a stunning 14-5 win.
The Blue Streaks continued to steamroll past the Quakers with convincing wins. JCU's Chris Romeo (Willoughby, OH, Lake Catholic) faced Josh Thompson at 141 pounds and used five takedowns en route to a win by a 15-6 score.
Senior
Daniel Mizener (Mason, OH, Mason) brought the Streaks to a 16-0 lead with his defeat of Quaker Rob Holt. He ended the match with a technical fall with only 12 seconds left on the third period clock. In improving to 21-5 on the season, mizener won by a 21-5 count.
Freshman
Andrew Schafer (Twinsburg, OH, St. Peter Chanel) wanted to be included in the high scoring club, and won his match in the 157 pound weight class defeating Thomas Bohrer, 14-4.
Junior
Devon Jurczak (Clinton Township, MI, Chippewa Valley) won by an 8-1 decision, after which
Travis Hammer (Lancaster, NY, Lancaster) accepted a forfeit win at 174. Senior
Ben Adams (Livonia, MI, Winston Churchill) followed with a tech fall, and fellow senior
Matt Harmon (River Forest, IL, Fenwick)plowed through his opponent for a 16-7 triumph.
Salyers used a second period escape and take down to build a 3-0 lead, then coasted to a 6-1 victory for the Quakers' lone win.
John Carroll won its fifth consecutive dual match to improve to 8-4 overall and 1-1 in the OAC. Wilmington falls to 3-3 and 1-2 in league action.
