The Men’s Lacrosse team defeated the previously nationally ranked Oakland University Grizzlies 8-5 during their second road trip of the season. Offensively, the Blue Streaks were led by sophomore Pat Durkin who put up 3 goals in the opening quarter.
The team’s freshmen had a great day as well with Frank Kinmonth (Baltimore, MD, Loyola Blakefield) posting two assists and a goal, Kevin Barker (Western Springs, IL) tallying two goals, and Christian Cirilloalso putting up a goal. Sophomore Harry Steinwald tallied an assist and junior Josh Tatro had three assists and one goal on the day. Because offense managed only eight goals, it was undoubtedly the team’s relentless defensive pressure and goalkeeping that won the game.
Senior goalkeeper Aaron Syguda (Columbus, OH, Upper Arlington)had twenty saves on the day saving 80% of the shots on goal. The defensive unit led by seniors Patrick Bloomstine (Erie, PA, Cathedral Prep) and Chad Palmer (Kent, Ohio, Theodore Roosevelt) kept the Oakland attack at bay the entire afternoon, never allowing the Grizzlies to settle into a rhythm despite possessing the ball for much of the game. Though JCU had trouble clearing the ball and were beaten in the ground ball and face-off battles, the determination of the Streak’s defense led the team to a well deserved victory
The Streaks are now 3-0 on the season and look to improve their record this weekend against Butler in their home opener this Saturday March 21 at 12:00pm.
