On a night when the seniors were honored, a pair of sophomores paid their respects with hard fought wins to help deliver a 32-12 victory over Muskingum in John Carroll's final home match of the 2009-2010 campaign.
After both teams traded forfeits in the lowest two weight classes (
Greg Stolfer accepted for JCU at 125 while Shawn Feistamel took the win at 133), Muskingum's Michael Halko won the first match contested on the mat. In the 141-pound bout, Halko used a takedown in the final seconds of the second tiebreaker period to win 5-4 over JCU freshman
David Malkus.
Connor Suba responded by scoring seven points in the opening period en route to a 9-1 major decision to hand John Carroll a 10-9 lead.
The Blue Streaks would never trail again thanks to a pair of unexpected wins at 157 and 165 by sophomores Vinny Pizzuli and
Sean Gill. Pizzuli was wrestling just his fifth match as a Blue Streak and faced Muskie senior Ralph Geesey. In a bout that featured four reversals, it would be the final one -- engineered by Pizzuli in the third period -- that decided the match.
Tied at 4-4, Pizzuli choose the down position and was able to roll through for his fifth and sixth points of the battle midway through the final frame. He then was able to ride Geesey the rest of the way for a 7-4 win.
Gill was then paired with Muskingum junior Adam Harris, who just ten days prior had pounded out a 15-6 major decision in the last meeting between the two. Harris opened up a 2-1 lead after one period, but Gill surprised Harris with a reversal that put the Muskie wrestler to his back. The five point move midway through the second period gave Gill a 6-2 advantage.
Still, it would take a takedown in the final 15 seconds of the third period to give Gill enough room to survive a late escape for an 8-6 victory.
Travis Hammer was the first senior to take to the mat on "Senior night" at the deCarlo varsity Center, but lost on riding time in his 174-pound bout, falling 1-0 to Mike Frasure.
Ben Adams followed, and the senior rolled his way to a 14-1 major decision at 184 pounds. It was the 88th win of Adams' career, moving him into sole possession of 13th place omn the all-time JCU victory list.
After
Jim Nemunaitis picked up a forfeit win at 197, the third and final senior to wrestler,
Alec Barker, ended the night emphatically with a pin at the 2:28 mark.
John Carroll, with its fourth consecutive win, improved to 5-5 overall and 2-2 in the Ohio Athletic Conference with the win. Muskingum falls to 3-12 overall and 1-4 in the league.
