On Friday night at the Kent State Golden Flash Gala, sophomore throws captain
Rocky Mitolo broke the school record in the weight throw. After a foul on his second throw, Mitolo bounced back to heave his implement 14.36 meters, for a throw just over 47 feet.
A benchmark to show the benefits of fall and winter training for the track team, the Gala provided the opportunity for the sprinters and field event athletes to compete, as the distance athletes continue to build up their mileage base following cross country season.
Other highlights from the men on day one included the performances of senior jumps captain
Mike Minjock, who made finals and placed fourth in the long jump with a jump of 6.72 meters and sophomore
Yevgeniy Khmelnitskiy, whose jump of 6.1 meters ties his second best-ever mark in the long jump.
Khmelnitskiy would return Saturday to set a huge personal best in the triple jump, reaching 12.38 meters.
Minjock, also known for his blistering speed, would add the 60-meter dash to his collection of school records, placing 19th in 7.18.
The men's shot putters had a huge weekend, as junior
Anthony Chizmadia and Mitolo place ninth and tenth, respectively. Chizmadia threw a full meter further than his previous college best, with a 14.72 meter marking. Mitolo was right behind his teammate in 14.71 meters, bettering a 13.77 mark achieved last outdoor season.
Cory Biro and
Nick Williams would come up with great performances in the 60-meter hurdles, as Williams ran to a school record 8.44 seconds, missing finals by one one-hundredth of a second. Biro was two spots behind in 8.59.
Sophomore
Nick D'Amico would set an indoor personal record by running 51.63 in the 400-meter dash, while freshman Mike Hydzik would make his collegiate debut at the event finishing in 51.76. D'Amico would also run an indoor best 23.24 in the 200-meter dash.
Head coach Dara Ford was very satisfied following the competition.
“I was really pleased with the meet for an early-season meet,” said Ford. “I think the guys came out and it gave us a good barometer of where they are right now. Going into winter break, they're going to work hard, and come back even stronger.”
The John Carroll men will take this momentum into their winter break training, and come back hungry with a full squad of competitors in January. The indoor track season will resume on January 19, 2013, at the SPIRE North Coast Open in Geneva, Ohio.
