Anthony Trocchio (white headgear) hung tough like several freshmen did in John Carroll's match at Cleveland State
It may sound cliche, but the final score was not what mattered most to John Carroll head coach
Kerry Volkmann in the Blue Streaks' match with Cleveland State Tuesday night at Woodling Gym in downtown Cleveland.
A Division III program spotting a Division I opponent 12 points due to two late scratches took any drama out of the final outcome.
What Volkmann wanted to see was effort.
That is what he got.
In the Blue Streaks' 33-6 loss to the Vikings, there was shining moments even in defeat.
Sal Corrao worked hard for seven solid minutes, scoring his first takedown late in the third period of a 15-6 loss.
Anthony Trocchio did likewise in the third period of his 8-4 loss at 141 pounds.
Yet another freshman,
Thomas McNulty, worked hard enough in the third period of his 12-2 loss at 165 pounds that he elicited two stalling points from his opponent.
"I was happy to see so many of our kids refuse to give in," said Volkmann. "Those third period takedowns were a great sign of the competitive nature of these kids. We gave nothing up without a fight. We hung right in there."
There were also a couple of wins to savor.
Terner Gott stayed undefeated on the year with a solid 7-2 win at 157, while
Todd Gaydosh lost his shutout in the final seconds, but still captured a 4-2 win at 184 pounds in which he dominated from start to finish with over two minutes of riding time. The win pushed Gaydosh's record to 8-1 on the year.
