Seven Student-Athletes And Two Teams Comprise 2015 JCU Athletic Hall Of Fame Class

The John Carroll University Athletic Hall of Fame will welcome seven former student-athletes and two legendary teams as its 2015 induction class.

This year's class includes Patrick Murphy (Football, class of 1991), Dale Kaprosy (Wrestling, class of 1993), Matt Warnement (Football, class of 1995), Bridget Hough (Softball, class of 2001), Lindsey Meier (Women's Swimming and Diving, class of 2005), Mark F. Hawald (Wrestling, class of 2005), and Shannon McConville (Women's Cross Country/Women's Track and Field, class of 2005).

The two teams are the 1974 and 1976 wrestling squads, both of which finished as the NCAA Division III Championship runner-up in their respective seasons.

The seven athletes and two teams will be enshrined on October 2, 2015, in recognition for their contributions toward and impact on Blue Streak athletics.

Patrick Murphy, class of 1991, was an All-American offensive lineman for the historic 1989 OAC championship team that made the program's first NCAA Division III playoff appearance.

Murphy was a team captain, two-year starter and three-year letterwinner during his time as a Blue Streak athlete. He was also named to first team All-OAC in the 1989 season.

In 1988 – his first letterwinning season – Murphy played every position on the offensive line except right tackle to earn his first letter. John Carroll was 16-4 in his two years as a starter, and the 1989 team rewrote the school's offensive record book in a season in which the Blue Streaks were ranked among top 25 teams statistically in nation in total offense and scoring offense

Dale Kaprosy, class of 1993, was a two-time NCAA Division III All-American who was undefeated in conference matches his final two seasons.

Resilience was a trait that defined Kaprosy during his years as a Blue Streak. After being a backup his freshman year and injured his sophomore year, Kaprosy earned two letters, two OAC titles at 167 pounds, and was awarded the 1993 Coaches Award in his final two seasons.

Kaprosy, who won 54 matches in his three letterwinning seasons, finished off his career in style with an eighth place finish at the national tournament during his senior year, one year after earning All-American honors for the first time with a seventh place finish as a junior.

John Carroll won the OAC title in each of his two years as a starter (1992 and 1993), and finished in the top 12 at the NCAA Division III Championships. The Blue Streaks placed fifth in 1992 and 12th in 1993.

Nose guard Matt Warnement, class of 1995, earned his place in the John Carroll Athletic Hall of Fame with an outstanding career in which he amassed 184 tackles and played in 39 out of a possible 40 games.

Warnement was a third team All-American and first team All-OAC selection during the 1994 season – a year that culminated with the Blue Streaks captured a share of the conference championship. He also was a two-time OAC Defensive Player of the Week during his career.

A four-year letterwinner, Warnement played on teams that won 23 of a possible 30 games in his three seasons as a starter. John Carroll was nationally ranked in total defense (8th), rushing defense (4th), and scoring defense (10th) in 1994 as the Blue Streaks finished the season 9-1.

Bridget Hough, from the class of 2001, was a two-time All-Central Region second team selection that was part of the historic 2000 softball team that won a school record 24 games.

A four-year letterwinner, Hough collected plenty of accolades over the course of her career including All-OAC second team on two occasions and her team's Most Outstanding Offensive Player Award three times. She was also the Most Outstanding Defensive Player Award recipient for the Blue Streaks in her junior year, and was a two-time team captain.

Hough left her mark on the John Carroll softball record book as she held the record for most hits in a season (57) and career (176), season RBI (34), season doubles (19), and career doubles (44).

As a senior, Hough was among the top ten Division III players nationally in Most Difficult to Strike Out (T-9th), and Doubles per Game (7th). She also excelled academically, as she was Academic All-District two times and Academic All-OAC three times.

Lindsey Meier, class of 2005, was a first-team All-American three different times throughout the 2004 and 2005 seasons. She also achieved honorable mention honors on two different occasions as a Blue Streak swimmer.

Not only was Meier part of the 2004 team that won the OAC title, but she also set seven school records throughout her JCU career, four of which still stand today. Meier was named the OAC Swimmer of the Year in her only two years swimming for John Carroll.

Meier earned all-conference 14 times, and was a ten-time OAC champion. She was a perfect 6-for-6 in OAC individual finals.

When Meier achieved 3rd place in the national finals of the 1650 Free in 2005, it marked (and still stands) as the highest national finish by a JCU female swimmer in program history. The points she scored as a senior at the NCAA Championships enabled John Carroll to finish 30th in final team standings

The class of 2005 also included Mark F. Hawald, a talented wrestler known for being a four-time national qualifier. He was only the fifth wrestler in OAC history at the time to win four individual league titles.

The OAC opposition was no match for Hawald as he concluded his career with a 35-2 record against conference opponents. This dominance was a key part of the team's four consecutive OAC Championships from 2002-2005.

Hawald has a deep list of accolades including the 2001 Outstanding Freshman Wrestler, 2002 Most Improved Wrestler, 2003 Outstanding Wrestler, 2004 Most Valuable Wrestler and 2005 Most Valuable Wrestler.

Hawald, a 2004 Division III All-American (3rd place at 177 pounds), currently holds the record for most matches wrestled in JCU history with 153, and shares the record for most victories (122) with Joe Schmidt.

Shannon McConville is one of three athletes to be inducted from the class of 2005. Her national honors include 2005 Outdoor Track and Field All-American in 5000-meter run, 2004 Cross Country All-American, 2004 Outdoor Track and Field All-American in 5000-meter run, and 2003 Cross Country All-American.

McConville earned an impressive seven letters between the cross country and track and field programs at John Carroll.

Her legacy as a Blue Streak athlete will carry on as she was the first women's NCAA Cross Country national qualifier in school history, she was the school's first cross country All-American, and she broke six school records in both 2005 seasons.

This two-sport athlete was also the 2004 Great Lakes Runner of the Year, 2004 All-Ohio Individual Title holder, and the 2004 and 2005 All-Ohio outdoor champion in the 5000 meter run.

The 1974 and 1976 wrestling teams had some of the greatest success in all of John Carroll athletics history. Outside of the 1975 national wrestling title (the only Division III championship in school history), the 1974 and 1976 wrestling teams have the highest national finishes in the history of the varsity sports programs at JCU.

The 1974 season was highlighted with six All-Americans, one national champion, and the distinction of being the national runner-up in the first year an NCAA Division III Championship was conducted.

The Blue Streaks improved on their 1974 season the following year by a achieving the NCAA Division III Championship title. This memorable team featured five All-Americans and four national champions.

1976 was even more success filled with seven All-Americans, three national champions, and two Division I All-Americans. The team repeated its 1974 performance as the NCAA Division III Runner-up team.

These wrestling teams never lost a dual meet or tournament to a Division III team with their only losses being against Division I programs. The 1974 and 1976 teams had dual meet & tournaments wins over Notre Dame, St. Johns, Seton Hall, Marquette, Bowling Green, Cincinnati, Akron, Ashland, Eastern Michigan, Toledo, Ohio State, Northwestern, Kent State, Georgia, Indiana, Alabama, Illinois to name a few.
