Giving up six points right off the bat is not the ideal game plan to upset a Division I opponent as a Division III school, but John Carroll did claim three victories of the nine bouts actually contest this afternoon against Cleveland State.
The Vikings overpowered John Carroll by a final score of 35-12. Cleveland State has now won 19 in a row in the series since a 19-19 tie back in 1998. JCU falls to 4-42-2 all-time against their Division I city rivals.
Trailing 12-0 after a forfeit at 285 (where the match was slated to start) and a fall at 125, John Carroll was given a much needed boost by sophomore
Dom Devine, who stunned Andrew Cohill with a pin at the 5:37 mark of the match for the Blue Streaks' first team points.Â
Jarrod Brezovec followed at 141 and lost for the first time as a collegian when he dropped a 10-7 decision to Sam Matzek at 141. Matzek was the Vikings' starter late in the season at 149 years ago and competed in the Eastern Wrestling League Tournament.
Jarrad Lasko had an outstanding effort in earning a 3-1 decision at 149 pounds over Ryan Ford to pull to the Blue Streaks to within 15-9.
Cleveland State pulled away by winning four of the last five bouts, including two by fall and one by technical fall. The lone John Carroll win in that stretch was pulled off byÂ
Blake Dixon, who outpointed Caleb Stockmaster in a high-scoring affair, 11-8, at 174 pounds.
The loss drops John Carroll's dual meet record to 5-3 on the year.
