Wrestling Secures First Conference Dual Win

The chips fall where they may, and making the most of advantageous opportunities helped secure a Blue Streak win on Tuesday evening.

The JCU wrestling team secured their first Ohio Athletic Conference dual win in a road contest against Otterbein University, 30-14, from the Rike Center in Westerville, Ohio.

For the road warriors, JCU secured six wins in the 10-match dual meet, helping to secure the sixth overall dual win of the season.

The six individual wins in a single dual are the third-most this season for the Blue Streaks, dating back to the JCU Duals. In the early season duals, the Blue Streaks secured eight individual wins against Case Western Reserve University, and seven individual wins against both Lourdes University and Lycoming College.

Otterbein gave up two of the first three weight classes due to forfeit, but collected one win at 133 lbs. by a 6-2 decision to keep the match close, 12-3, through the first three weight classes.

Dom Devine (125) and Jarrod Brezovec (141) picked up six team points each for their wins by forfeit.

The Blue Streaks then went on a rout; winning by a pair of second period falls in both the 149 and 157-pound divisions by Jarrad Lasko and Austin Victor, respectively.

Aidan Whitis then defeated Christian Koch of Otterbein at 165-pounds by a close 13-12 decision, thus making the team score to 27-3 in favor of JCU.

Blake Dixon also had a match go somewhat down to the wire, though Dixon pulled away late to secure three more team points by collecting a 15-8 win by decision.

The five-match win streak was halted at 184 pounds, as Donny Didion of Otterbein defeated Jimmy Suhayda by sudden victory, 4-3 in overtime.

The Cardinals then won the final two matches at 197 pounds and 285 pounds, winning by decision at 197 and technical fall at 285.

Up next, the Blue Streaks will host the 2018 JCU Open tournament on Sunday at the Tony DeCarlo Center Varsity Center in University Heights, Ohio, before hosting Muskingum University two days later in the final dual and regular season competition of the 2017-18 season.
