1975 Wrestling Team
2008 Hall of Fame Inductee
A year after John Carroll heavyweight Joe Bertolone won an individual championship as a heavyweight at the 1974 NCAA championships JCU played host to the top wrestlers in Division III as the John Carroll gym was the site of the 1975 NCAA DIII wrestling championships.
The home mat advantage would be pivotal for the Blue Streaks as four JCU wrestlers took individual titles as they helped the team take the overall crown.
Mark Hawald-Cale's 3-2 victory in the 134-pound championship secured an undefeated season for the senior and a come-from-behind effort by Charles Becks guaranteed the first national title for any JCU team.
Bertolone took home his second national title and Brad Bowman was the fourth individual champion for the Blue Streaks. In all, JCU entered the tournament with five of their six wrestlers ranked in the top three of their respective class.
The 1975 wrestling team remains the only JCU team to have won a national championship and will become the first team as a whole to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.
