John Carroll University served as a host site for the sectional round of the 2009 NCAA® Division III Men’s Basketball Championship, which was held Friday and Saturday, March 13-14, at the school’s DeCarlo Varsity Center. 

Guilford College emerged from this sectional to advance to the Division III national semifinals with a thrilling 64-59 overtime victory over the University of Texas at Dallas on Saturday evening

In sectional semifinal, Guilford defeated John Carroll, 78-73, while UT-Dallas prevailed over Capital, 71-63.

Tyler Sanborn of Guilford was named the sectional Most Valuable Player, and was joined on the team by teammate Rhett Donner, Jimmy Witten of UT-Dallas, Tyler Kirsch of John Carroll and Nate Stahl of Capital.

The sectional round featured four nationally ranked teams: #13 ranked Capital University (26-5), representing the Ohio Athletic Conference, #22 ranked University of Texas at Dallas (26-5) from the American Southwest Conference at 6:00 p.m., #10 ranked John Carroll (25-5) from the OAC against #23 ranked Guilford College (25-5) of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.
